Home Funerals

Home Funerals

Throughout most of human history, families and religious communities have cared for their own dead. It was only after the Civil War and the advent of embalming that the modern funeral industry arose. In Washington State, we have always had the right to care for our loved ones after death, but it has been generations since it has been commonly practiced. Many Jewish and Muslim communities continue to care for their dead. Learn what it takes to have a home funeral and how to properly plan ahead to be sure there is a support system of people who are willing and able to commit to the responsibilities.

People's Memorial Association is a Seattle-based nonprofit dedicated to funeral education and advocacy. Members and not-yet-members are welcome. Registration is not required but appreciated.
