VSED (pronounced vee-said) stands for voluntary stopping eating and drinking. At the end of their lives, many people lose their appetites and stop eating as their body’s organs shut down. With VSED, an individual deliberately chooses to stop eating and drinking in order to hasten death.
Because Americans have a right to refuse care, VSED is a legal option in the U.S, and allows death to take place at home. VSED is an option that allows one to have agency and choice in their end of life care.
